The fact is, there are a lot of companies out there who are in the cannabis space, but don’t necessarily make the best products. Whether it’s pesticides, pollutants or just improper labeling, many product makers fail to hit the mark and fail laboratory testing. Even some of the better companies can have trouble with these things, as cannabis is a complex organism with hundreds of active compounds. This means that companies who take testing, labeling and distribution seriously are usually amongst some of the better product makers. Here are some of what you might call “gold standard” products.
We’ve mentioned Mara Gordon and Aunt Zelda’s several times, and have included their products in several of our top product articles. And there’s a good reason for this – Mara and Aunt Zelda’s takes the science behind cannabis-based medicine seriously. They make products to a high standard of quality, test their products thoroughly, and point patients to the products most suited to them.
These are some of the products available on Aunt Zelda’s line at the moment:
- Two types of THC extract – one from Blueberry Diesel, the other from Cookies.
- Three types of CBD extract – all from The Gift.
- A THC-rich topical made with premium cannabis, organic coconut oil, organic cosmetic-grade beeswax, organic arnica, and ten organic essential oils including – lavender, lavender spike, myrrh, frankincense, bergamot, cinnamon, rosemary, rosemary cineole, sage, and lemongrass. Can be very useful for pain, inflammation, arthritis, and skin disorders.
7 types of cannabis-infused olive oil:
- Weed the People THC:CBD 1:1 (could be useful for chronic pain, arthritis and conditions like Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis)
- Daytime Infused Olive Oil (low to moderate THC)
- Nighttime Infused Olive Oil (higher doses of THC, ideal for insomnia);
- Extra Strength THC Infused Olive Oil (high doses of THC ideal for chronic pain & possibly opioid replacement);
- Regular Strength CBD Infused Olive Oil (low to moderate doses of CBD, ideal for daytime use);
- Extra Strength CBD Infused Olive Oil (high doses of CBD, which could be helpful for seizure disorders);
- Women’s Blend Infused Olive Oil (CBD-dominant with moderate levels of THC, ideal for PMS and menopause);
- 4:1 THC:CBD Infused Olive Oil (THC-dominant with moderate levels of CBD, which could be useful for autism spectrum disorders, chronic pain and some types of cancer).
We here at Leafwell are fans of those who put their money where their mouth is, and get their products lab tested for efficacy. This is the case with Ilera / Zelira’s HOPE formulations for autism spectrum disorder, which has been shown to be effective in clinical trials. To quote from Ilera Healthcare’s white paper, respondents who used HOPE 1 and/or HOPE 2 found:
“Significant improvements in patient irritability (68%), meltdowns (60%), aggression (55%), anxiety (49%) as well as capacity to focus (38%); while 69% of participants reported an improved quality of life for the patient. In addition, 58% reported improved quality of life for the entire family.”
To give a brief breakdown of HOPE 1 and HOPE 2:
- HOPE 1 = THC:CBD ratio of 1:1 with Eucalyptol, Valencene and Alpha-Pinene terpenes.
- HOPE 2 = THC:CBD ratio of 5:1 with beta-Caryophyllene, Myrcene and Alpha-Bisabolol terpenes.
Ilera’s HOPE is available in Australia, too, meaning that it is one of the few products that is available globally!
Cannabis Science also makes products with medical patients in mind. Inhalers can be very useful for those who need immediate relief and a precise dosage without the need to vape or smoke cannabis, such as those suffering from conditions like anxiety, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Transdermal patches can be very useful for those who need targeted pain relief due to conditions like nerve pain or arthritis. Rectal suppositories can be of immense use for those who have cancer of the stomach or bowels, or those who suffer from diseases such as Crohn’s. For those who are particularly sensitive to the psychoactive effects of THC, suppositories could be ideal as they do not have the “head high” associated with oral consumption.
The President, CEO and Co-Founder of Cannabis Science is a Mr. Raymond C. Dabney, who has all sorts of accolades, including the 2018 Harvard Global Health Catalyst Industry Leader Award. He has also had some groundbreaking research published in Frontiers in Oncology, and has several cannabinoid-based medications undergoing clinical trials. As stated for Ilera’s HOPE above, this bodes well for us here at Leafwell, as we like to see clinical data attached to medical cannabis products wherever possible.
The wide range of products and willingness to put their products through clinical trials earns Cannabis Science a spot on this list.
We here at Leafwell are usually wary of CBD-only hemp products. This is because we realize that cannabinoid-based medications work best when they contain THC and all the other cannabinoids & terpenes combined with CBD (the entourage effect). However, we also realize that not everybody has access to THC products, and that some people may benefit from whole-plant extract CBD products. Therefore, people need a high-quality CBD product that can be delivered to them without too much difficulty.
Enter CiiTech’s Provacan, who produce a wide range of CBD tinctures, oils, topicals, edibles and more. As with other products on this list, CiiTech are committed to scientific research, and they have some heavyweight names helping them out on their studies. Names like Dr. Yossi Tam, Prof. Francesaca Levi-Schaffer and the father of contemporary cannabis research, Prof. Raphael Mechoulam.
When it comes to vaporizers, we would usually recommend either the Storz & Bickel Volcano or Plenty vaporizers. Whilst these are still excellent vaporizers, the Puffco Peak Pro is probably easier to use than the Volcano (no need for a balloon bag, for one), and is more well-suited for vaporizing concentrates compared to the Plenty vaporizer. Moreover, Puffco’s vaporizer is far less clunky than many other desktop vaporizers. All this together makes the Puffco Peak Pro one of the better choices when it comes to vaping concentrates, and is probably far safer than heating up a huge dab rig!
Dosecann is a Canadian company with a simple, plain-packaged product line that includes THC- and CBD-rich oils and capsules, as well as a 1:1 THC:CBD cannabis oil. Dosecann also infuse a 4:1 CBD:THC product with the omega-3-rich ahiflower oil, which some may find beneficial for brain and bone health.
The reason why we are putting Dosecann on this list is because the company has received a Cannabis Research Licence from Health Canada. This permits Dosecann to administer cannabis extracts, edible cannabis and cannabis topicals to human subjects for purposes of palatability and sensory testing at its state-of-the-art facility located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Accordingly, they have created a number of products that are accurate with regards to cannabinoid content and dosing.
Unfortunately, Dosecann products are not available in the US at this time, so we have to keep it to being an honorable mention!
Please note that, in many states throughout the US, most of the above products are considered illegal. If you wish to purchase and utilize any of the above without breaking the law, it is best to get certified for medicinal cannabis and get a medical marijuana card!
