With the massive rise of cannabidiol (CBD) over the last few years, you’ve more than likely met someone who has used it in one way or another. Maybe it’s your friend who’s really into hiking who has recommended using a CBD cream to ease their sore muscles and feet after a long day on the trail. Maybe it’s someone who swears by vaping a little bit of CBD oil to ease their anxiety, unwind after a long day, and get the restful sleep they need. Or maybe it’s someone who happens to use CBD for the health of the largest organ on the human body, your skin?

That’s right, CBD-based skincare is totally a thing, and just like the rest of the CBD industry, it’s primed to absolutely explode. In only a few short years since hemp-derived CBD was legalized by the 2018 Farm Bill, we’ve seen the legal CBD industry turn into a multi-billion dollar juggernaut. It only makes sense that smart entrepreneurs and companies are using the anti-inflammatory, anxiety-reducing, sleep-facilitating factors of CBD into skincare products, another multi-billion dollar industry.

But, just like with many commercial CBD products flooding onto the shelves, people have questions about CBD skincare products. Which ones are the best for what I’m trying to treat? Is this product worth the price tag? Which ones do I really need and which ones can I just leave on the store shelf? Thankfully we here at Leafwell have a comprehensive guide of which products are essential, what exactly they do, and how to tell if they’re worth the hard-earned money you could be spending at your local medical cannabis dispensary.

Let’s get right into it, shall we?

What To Consider Before You Buy

There are some important key factors you’ll need to consider when it comes to figuring out which CBD skincare products are right for you.

You’ll have to decide which products are right for you based on the potency, ingredients, quality, price, and, most importantly, the CBD type itself.

While there are a ton of different options for what type of CBD you can get, we recommend full-spectrum oils to take advantage of the entourage effect and get the best bang for your buck. When it comes to quality, you’ll want to check and see if the product is tested by an independent lab. Most os the products mentioned here are CBD-based as they are more widely available and legal to buy. However, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can also be useful for skin problems and even more severe problems like melanomas. Also, CBD and THC skincare products are not psychoactive, as they do not penetrate beyond the first few layers of skin.

So now that you know how to tell if a product is at least somewhat legit, we can talk about what type of products you should consider picking up to take care of your skin.

Which Types of CBD Product Should You Get?

In terms of which types of products you should prioritize getting, we recommend two. We know it can be overwhelming and confusing when you look in the skin care aisle at the store, let alone adding some CBD into the mix.

Your three CBD skin-care essentials are likely going to be a face serum/mask, something to soak in while you’re in the tub like a bath bomb or bath salt, and a reliable, multi-use CBD-infused cream (including topicals or salves).

Let’s break them down one-by-one.

CBD Face Serums/Masks

For most people, the most consistently visible part of their skin is their face. That’s why, as we age, our faces tend to change and show the wear and tear of being exposed to the elements all the time. That’s why the skin-care industry is SO obsessed with caring for the skin on your face. These new CBD-infused products are no different.

The best face serums and masks you’ll find on the market are usually a mix of essential oils and CBD oils, which have a calming, anti-inflammatory effect with a pleasant scene to boot. This could make such products useful for the treatment of conditions like acne.

Serums and masks are usually applied to your face, left to sit on the surface of the skin for somewhere around 20 minutes or so, then are washed off. That’s usually enough time for the CBD in the mask or serum to soak into the skin and give you a calming, anti-inflammatory boost.

Here’s a great example of the natural, high-quality face serum by Plant People, which contains 300mg of cannabinoids (CBD + cannabichromene (CBC)) and 13+ potent botanicals.

We also recommend the hyaluronic acid & collegen full spectrum face serum from Pure + Planted and full-spectrum hemp oil youth serum from Synchronicity, both made of natural ingredients for the health of your face, that give you the benefits of CBD and the entourage effect.

CBD Bath Bomb/Salts

Few things are more relaxing than a long, hot soak in the tub. When you add CBD into that mix, it’s bound to be a relaxing, soothing experience. You can take your next bath to the next level with a wonderful full-spectrum CBD-infused bath bomb/salt.

Along with the CBD, some of the best bombs and salts are packed with other natural anti-inflammatory ingredients like arnica flower, dead sea salts, and magnesium. They’re also tested for the highest-quality essential oils, terpenes, cannabinoid concentration, pesticides, microbials, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and residual solvents.

Both salts and balms dissolve in the water, producing a lovely scent and a relaxing, soothing bath to calm your nerves and aching muscles after a long, hard day.

We would say the best example of a stand-out CBD-infused bath salt or bomb, go with the Vertly infused bath salts for a 100mg kick of CBD when you need it most.

When it comes to quality bath bombs, we recommend the lavender CBD bath bombs from Joy Organics for a THC-free experience that combined coconut oil and cocoa seed butter to moisturize and nourish your skin, along with the relaxing scent and effects of lavender oil.

Joy Organics spoke to Leafwell and said:

“We formulated our luxurious CBD Bath Bombs to provide the ultimate relaxation experience. The 20mg of broad spectrum CBD combined with organic lavender essential oil create the perfect self-care treat for busy people looking to unwind.”

For a full-spectrum bath bomb option, we would recommend Equilibria Balance bath bombs. Made from a mix of essential oils, lavender with lemongrass, and cardamom with rose, these THC-infused bath bombs are made to chill you out.

All-Purpose CBD Creme – Topicals and Salves

When it comes to CBD, it’s super versatile. It can be useful for easing anxiety, reducing pain from sore muscles or nagging injuries, and working as an effective sleep aid for those stressful after work moments.

That’s why it’s important to make sure you have a strong, general-use CBD cream. That way you can use it for spot pain, like a sore ankle here or a patch of dry skin there. When it comes to taking care of the skin on the rest of your body, a general use CBD cream is best. Also, sometimes a bath is just inconvenient. Maybe you only have time to apply a little cream instead of running and soaking in a full bath.

Regardless, with a substance as versatile as full-spectrum CBD, you’ll want a way to apply and use it that’s just as versatile.

When it comes to topical general use CBD creams, it’s hard to beat Charlotte’s Web. They have a little bit of everything so you can pick the scent, dosage, and form of cream that works best for you and your needs!

If you’re looking for a brand outside of Charlotte’s Web, we would recommend a product like the CBDol Topical balm from CBDistilery, a full-spectrum option made from coconut oil, almond oil, aloe, and a wide range of different natural ingredients. For a full-spectrum option with a soothing, minty twist, check out the mint CBD balm from Lazarus Naturals.

The main conclusion about CBD skincare products

It’s also worth noting that there have been some promising early studies that seem to suggest CBD products can really help your skin. For example, a 2019 study found that CBD ointment seems to be a safe and effective way to reduce and treat inflammation-based skin ailments such as eczema, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. Another 2020 study showed that CBD might be effective in easing symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, a condition that causes pain and tingling sensation in the limbs.

Just like with most things cannabis, unfortunately, these studies are very limited due to the continued outdated federal illegality of cannabis in the U.S. So while we can’t conclusively say that CBD for any type of skincare is a sure-fire solution to your issues, the evidence that it might play some role is compelling. You should always talk with your doctor, like one of the certified medical cannabis doctors from Leafwell, before you start using any type of cannabis-based product.

The next time you stop by your local medical dispensary, see what they’re offering in terms of CBD-based creams, salves, and tinctures. In fact, check out the THC-containing ones as well! It could do a world of good for your skin, mental, and overall health!
